Fantastic
Creatures,
created for Austin Public Library's Summer Reading
Program,
uses myth to teach about art and inspire the joys of reading and
books.

Created
for the Austin Public Library Summer Reading Program, the Fantastic
Creatures series uses myth to teach about art and inspire
the joys of reading and books.
During the program, Tony creates many imaginary creatures while telling
the myths that they derive from and working audience participation into
the designs.

Tony
creates a variety of imaginary creatures while telling the audience
about the myths that they derive from.

Tony draws
several different types of Dragons like the Chinese Lung, Japan's birdlike
O-Gon-Cho, and Africa's Amphitere and two-headed Amphisbaena.
Kids learn about the healing powers of the mythical Unicorn's horn.
Kids exercise their imaginations while taking a fanciful journey to
ancient Greece, the land of the Gorgon and Griffon.

audience witnesses as all of these creatures are drawn.
Then these full-color souvenirs are all given to the audience.

Eager students
learn the riddle of the Sphinx and win prizes if they guess the answer
to the riddle.

are given to the audience as souvenirs
But creating art takes more than just imagination. The audience learns
the importance of research and reference skills. They learn how illustrators
get into the skins of characters and how they create alien worlds by
looking at the world around them.

the opportunity to win free posters by sending in stories or pictures
of their own Fantastic Creatures!
